Painting the Wonder and Awe

Welcome to my studio, where this photo resting on the windowsill reminds me of who I am, an artist. Whether finger painting as a toddler, figure drawing as a young adult or painting in my middle age—my art is me and my inspiration is my environment. I’m attuned to the wonder and beauty that surround us. Expressing these observations creatively has always been part of my life.

In college, my professor, the late Barkley Hendricks, encouraged me to notice the unremarkable details. He reminded me that being an artist is being an observer. Since then, I devote time within my day to observe nature, journal personal meditations and sketch my surroundings and memories. Together, they create beautiful, soulful paintings.

As I sweep a brush full of paint across a canvas, layer collage within a composition and scratch in marks with charcoal, I create a piece of art for others and a diary page for myself. I hope you enjoy immersing yourself in my work and my process!

The original laundry room of our 1880 house is my happy place where I create my art. Carts of materials (paint, charcoal, pencils, crayons, thread, antique papers) and tools (brushes, sandpaper, scrapers, chopsticks) are by my side as I create pieces of art that reflect the miraculous world we inhabit and nuanced memories we treasure.
